The Breaking of Bonds – Bad Blood Trilogy, Book Two

A human sacrifice throws vampires of two worlds, trueborn and baseborn, into an escalating conflict. One side pushes for revenge, the other for freedom. The trueborns stubbornly hunt for Anthony and Louis, pushed by Hesrah’s desire to avenge her human best friend, Alexa. The baseborns are divided between rallying with those challenging the rule of Ankhsis and obeying the trueborns.

What emerges from the portal between Earth and Ankhsis in the middle of the turmoil rocking both worlds is more dead than alive. Neither human, nor baseborn, and certainly not trueborn. This new being will either damn them all or be their race’s most powerful weapon. Will they trust it not to destroy them, or will Ankhsis decide putting it down is the only solution?

In the end, who is guilty? Who will pay? Will anyone survive its wrath?

EXCERPT

Andrew July, one year later ANDREW HAD PURPOSELY CHOSEN THE HEAVYWEIGHT, padded envelope for this letter. A familiar ominous sensation squeezed his ribs tighter as he glanced in the rearview mirror at the child asleep in the car seat. This time, the band of tension around his ribs tightened with something new. Panic. “I’m doing this for him. Lucas needs her,” he whispered to the face in the mirror, but that guy didn’t seem to believe the words. “Okay, so I need her too,” he admitted. The phone screen went dark and hid the email from Masa. His warning that The Guard would be coming for them turned Andrew’s stomach sour. As he opened the door the night air, heavy with brine, swirled into the car. He’d waited until midnight so no one would see. Now the building wasn’t just deserted, but full of a darkness that held secrets and fear. For his son, he’d walk through hell before giving up any chance to keep him safe. The car door clicked softly closed, and the lights flashed when he pressed the LOCK button on the key fob. Thankfully, Lucas didn’t stir. The paper and Windex smell of the post office curdled his dinner. His stomach rolled with nausea, which caused sweat to bead on his forehead. His shoes squeaked louder with each step across the lobby’s slick tiles. As he opened the mail slot, it produced a startling squeal sounding enough like a scream that his heart thumped harder against his ribs. Half the envelope hung in the dark void but he couldn’t let go. Releasing the letter held wonderful and horrible possibilities. He swiped at the fresh goosebumps that crawled up the back of his neck, now slick with cold sweat. Will this hurt her more? He’d already taken so much from Neely, all while professing love. Will this be one more on my very long list of sins? The clouds covering the moon’s face swirled into wisps of mist, and moonlight brightened the room. He glanced over his shoulder as light splashed onto the car’s black paint and reflected silver. Beams spilled through the back glass and leached the brilliant red and gold away to transform the child’s hair into a white cloud of curls. Lucas slept on soundly, safe, close, perfectly adorable, and so much like her. “My son needs his mother,” Andrew whispered, as the envelope hit with a thud against the bottom of the chute. “And I need Neely’s help.” The shore road’s lights became a blurred stream of neon pinks and yellows on the drive home. Carrying Lucas into the house and tucking him into bed left Andrew with too much time to think about what he’d done. He walked out onto the deck, closed his eyes, and inhaled. The salty air instantly energized his muscles and caressed that other side of his nature. “I hope this is the right decision,” he whispered to the stars. The creation story his grandmother had told him came flooding back and his heart grew heavier with the memory of her warm smile. “Somewhere in all that dark sky and water The Mother and The Father are parted,” Gran had whispered to him in the dark. “They are destined to forever mourn the loss of each other, giving the world light now at the cost of their separation.” “Sacrifice,” he said softly as the echo of waves slapping the sand bounced off the house. Will that be my fate? He missed Gran terribly on nights like this. She’d been the only person in the world with the power to talk sense into his mother during his childhood. Gran had rescued him so many times from Margarette’s wild schemes. How different would my life be now if she’d lived? But my Gran is dead, and now it’s my responsibility to keep Lucas safe from the real monster, his grandmother, Margarette. A cold shiver ran down his spine at the thought of Margarette getting her hands on his son. He glanced toward the play of lights reflected by the nightlight onto the bedroom window and smiled. His phone buzzed against his thigh with another email. The bubble of peace he’d worked so hard to create for Lucas cracked a little more. His smile turned into a hard pinch of muscles in his face. There’s absolutely nothing I won’t do for Lucas. He’d never anticipated what his desires might cost him when it had only been Neely’s love he wanted. Now the price he might have to pay for having fallen in love with her suddenly seemed very high. Especially every time Masa sent a new warning. His emails always came as kind of a shock. He’d known Masa his whole life as a family friend and never guessed he’d been so much more to Margarette. And now to him. Masa had shown more unconditional love as his biological father over the last year than Margarette ever had as his mother. Andrew shoved his hands into his pockets and stepped off the deck onto the cooling sand. He stripped down to skin and sighed as the water covered his ankles. The moon hung heavy and full over the water. A trail of silver light glittered on the surface and called to that hidden part of his every cell. Energy from the crashing waves thrummed under his skin the deeper he walked into the water. Refueling, renewing, and soothing his soul with each lap against his body. Blessed Mother knows I need all the help I can get now. He thanked The Earth Mother and Tangaroa with a silent prayer for the sea’s gift as his head disappeared under the waves and he hoped that somewhere in all those stars and midnight, Gran might be proud of the man he’d been trying so hard to become.

A maniac is murdering gang leaders in the desert outside San Diego . An upstart Mexican cartel has infiltrated the local market with a toxic new drug. Black magic is whispered in alleys and zombie tweekers roam the streets. The world stands on the brink of something sinister and occult but the only guy Donnie DeGrassi knows that can piece together this supernatural puzzle has completely vanished from the scene. Some say Kal Renley is crazy, others claim he’s a genius, but those that dose his chemicals just know him as the Medicine Man, master of high-flying drugs and head-spinning trips. He also knows more about the supernatural than anyone else on the streets. Can Donnie get his best friend out of an early retirement before reality gets as ugly as the underworld?

Excerpt
Mek, I can’t get it out… He felt it nesting already in the slimy folds of his subconscious and somehow he’d failed at his own game. A snake expert taken out by venom. Eden was horrified. She burst into tears and kept repeating “Oh god, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry…” as she backed away to the door. Kal tried to raise a hand to stop her but he was shaky and weak. “You have to shut it out,” Meklyn hissed. He was protective of Kal’s mind—that’s where he lived, after all—but this one had gotten the jump on them both. “I’m sorry,” Eden stammered in horror and guilt before disappearing into the rain-soaked night. “No wait,” Kal pleaded but the curse was sending him into shock. The effects of that sigil still writhed inside his head and, for a moment, he wasn’t sure if he was really this cosmic millennial medicine man that had spoken to gods, wrestled angels, and banished demons or if he was just a delusional addict with severe psychological issues. Probably both. Images of horror and shame raced through him and he thrashed violently. Something was on him, chasing him down the long halls of his mind. Something that got inside him with just a glance at that symbol. Heather’s death, the clan violence, the shadow hunters on the astral plane, all the things that drove him into seclusion and out of the game, it all swarmed his mind at once. The cabinet he had been holding shut for months came bursting open to spill the slimy contents of his repressed subconscious into plain view. He stumbled toward the kitchen and crashed through drawers and shelves in search of something to ward off the effects. He was looking for something specific. His own special tonic. His Joos. But he knew better. He didn’t keep any in the house. Had a slight problem staying away from it when a supply was on hand. His own little vice. But now he needed it. Whatever curse had been embedded in that girl’s ink was currently kicking the shit out of him from the inside. Kal managed to get to his feet, the world spinning and screaming around him, and stumbled out into the rain. Only one place in this neighborhood kept the Joos. Kal stumbled, sick and puking, through the night, wavering on the edge of a mad abyss, looking and groping for help, for a fix of his own. For his own medicine.

A horrible disease is ravaging the vampire community in New York City’s underworld. The Vampire Council is on a crusade to obliterate those infected. Harrow Gates is sick, alone, and hunted. A bounty hanging over his head, he is in no position to refuse when Pritchard Tack offers him not only a new beginning, but also a chance to rectify the chaos he created in the vampire world. Now the greatest threat Harrow faces is hope. Jordan is a reluctant new vampire and a woman on a mission. Her only focus is revenge. In her search for vengeance, a stroke of luck leads her to an underground facility. Once inside the bunker, Jordan meets a man who threatens to pull her heart away from her sworn mission. There is something behind Harrow’s dark lenses that unsettles the hardened female. Is love strong enough to override her thirst for vengeance?
HUNTED EXCERPT Harrow looked up at the sound of her footsteps, his eyes unfocused. His sunglasses were on the table, and his eyes were almost opaque in color when they settled on her. He sat up on the bed. “Jordan, please go away.” He hissed and moved back when she approached. Her movement was slow and calculated. She was unwilling to startle him into action. “Darling, I need to draw blood from you,” Jordan said, as if appeasing a crying child with sweet offerings. His fangs were incredibly long. She wasn’t sure if she was imagining it, but she thought she saw them throb right before her very eyes. It had been almost two weeks since he’d last fed, and it looked like he had reached his limit. Harrow licked his dried, chapped lips and inched away from her. The lesions on his arms, legs, and around his neck were raw, almost glowing red and had grown bigger. He gritted his teeth as if to dispel the demons of his disease. Jordan was certain it had something to do with the burning pain from the wounds as well as the pang of hunger. Starvation was a tough opponent, because it would eat you up alive and spew out your carcass after it finished you off. “Make it quick, because I’m trying hard here.” Harrow appeared bone tired, his tone weary as he held out his arm after he made sure she was wearing gloves. “Move fast,” he reminded her as he eyed her jugular. The pulsing clearly began to excite him. “I know you won’t hurt me.” She kept her voice low and held his arm. He was burning hot, and she felt like her hands would melt on contact. Harrow rested his arm on his thigh as she tried to keep her hands steady. Harrow drew in a deep breath before exhaling with a curse. “Hurry up, Jordan.” Once she stuck the needle into his skin, Harrow hissed and began twitching again. After she filled the evacuated collection tube with blood, she pulled out the needle and applied a little pressure to the entry site with her finger before taping it up. “Get out now!” he screamed. “Now!” Before she stepped away, she held his gaze for a moment and whispered the words she’d been dying to tell him. “I love you, Harrow.” Time stood still as soon as the words were out of her mouth. Harrow’s breathing slowed, and his twitching ceased for just a moment. “I love you more,” he said. “But please, get out of this room now.” He didn’t scream the order, he whispered it as if it was a last ditch effort before he turned savage. Jordan walked out the door, which Leroy held open for her. Her heart was aching, but at the same time, it was soaring. How could her heart sing and lament at the same time?

Tor Burns is a noninfected vampire committed to saving his diseased comrades from certain death at the hands of the Vampire Council. He is the meanest, strongest, and most impulsive member of the team with a new purpose: guard the irresistible daughter of their fallen leader, even if it means having to cast his attraction aside. Allison Tack is an infected vampire and a walking target wherever she goes. She wants to learn how to protect herself, but no one is listening, so she sets out to prove that she can fight alongside the best of them. The harem leader, Melissa, is determined to discover her son’s fate. Time has made her desperate enough to wage war against Tor’s group, not realizing that she has fallen into a trap. Tormented by his past, Tor must decide between paying the price or risk losing the woman loves.
TORMENTED EXCERPT Allison held onto his neck as tight as she could, and they both fell on the mattress, Tor landing on top of her. She didn’t let go, even though the weight of his body was heavy on her small frame. “What the hell are you doing?” Tor shouted as he pushed himself up, but Allison locked her legs around his waist, trapping him. “Doing what I want to do,” she answered and moved her mouth to his. She felt his breath catch in his throat, and a look of terror crossed his face. This reaction was not what she had hoped for, and his rejection hurt. Tor moved his mouth away like she was offering him poison instead of herself. “You’re insane.” He held her shoulders with restraining fingers before he pushed her body away, despite her resistance. Her strength was no match for his, and he set her aside like a ragdoll, unwanted and rejected. He stood, his dreadlocks falling over his shoulders. Looking at her with disgust, Tor’s nostrils flared before he stalked out the door, slamming it shut. The silence that followed was deafening. Allison was left stunned and unable to move, her eyes stinging with tears of humiliation. What had she done?

Rohnert comes from a long line of pure-blooded vampires, but he has broken away from the Vampire Council, which is being run into the ground by Goran, a former friend and ally. With the vampire race in upheaval, he allies with a group of freedom fighters. However, nothing could have prepared him for their determined human doctor. Shelly Anderson vowed not to fall in love, but her resolve quickly changes upon meeting the enigmatic vampire. After their one night together ends in a nightmare, Rohnert’s unexpected reentry into her life derails her plans once more. Rohnert soon realizes the lengths he is willing to go to keep Shelly and their child close and safe, even if it means violating a long-standing decree among pure-blooded vampires to keep their bloodlines alive. When harsh reality comes knocking, Rohnert must fight to save the people he loves before he loses them forever.
ASCENSION EXCERPT Rohnert was already undressing Shelly with his eyes the moment the bolt on the door engaged. Man, it had been a while. This time, he would initiate every damn thing. He had a lot to make up for—the lost time, the way he’d left, and overall, his idiocy. He had led her to believe that he couldn’t love her. Who had he been kidding? She was the very air he breathed, the single reason why living was bearable. Now that she was carrying his child, he’d treat her just like the queen that she was. It didn’t take half a brain to know he’d screwed up, and he wouldn’t take her forgiveness for granted. Ever. “So we need to talk,” he said, running his hand along her collarbone. Shelly closed her eyes, and her expression told him that the talking could wait. She had better things in mind. She wanted to make love to him. He stiffened, and so did his cock. “What are we going to talk about?” Her voice took a nosedive, becoming husky, and she wormed her soft hands around his waist, her lips parted like an invitation to a playground. Okay, initiation on his part didn’t happen. The woman was fast. The scent of her lust wafted in the air, and his nostrils flared. “I want to show you how much to mean to me.” He threaded his fingers through her silky hair. “How much?” Her hand wound to the hardened bulge in his pants. Rohnert jerked on contact, welcoming the intrusion. “So much that I’m aching,” Her eyes spoke volumes, and her lips curved into a playful smile. “You like it?” He shifted, allowing more room for her to navigate. The pleasure of her fingers grazing his skin made him tremble, his knees weakening under her touch. “You have no idea.” So much for making the first move. Shelly was in the driver’s seat, and he was just going along for the ride—which was wrong. It was his turn to give her pleasure, but her hand cupping his erection made it very difficult to think. Rohnert moved his body to give her space to work. He was such a selfish bastard, but one look at her gave him absolution. She was enjoying this as much as he was.

Someone is exposing the vampires of New York City to the human world. This is bad news for Cyrus and his fighters. Events derail his plans to find Zane, who forced immortality on him. Cyrus soon finds himself torn between revenge and his responsibilities, and a beautiful pureblooded vampire who makes him rethink his priorities. Isidora can read minds, and Cyrus’ are filled with both anger towards Zane and a deep admiration for her. Although Issy has no idea what to do in the face of the outside world’s war, one thing is clear. She craves Cyrus, but his need for vengeance is clouding his mind. Should Issy pursue her feelings for Cyrus or wait until he can return her affection? Will Cyrus deny his attraction to Isidora so he can kill the man who made his life a living hell on earth? Every decision leads to a reckoning.

RECKONING EXCERPT Her skin was warm, sinfully warm, and Cyrus couldn’t handle the emotions that came with her touch. He drew his hand away. “It must be tough having to live with the bullshit you hear every day.” From her hunched shoulders and the way she ran her palm along the smooth surface of the table, he could tell she had something on her mind, and it wasn’t along the lines of yeah, I love the mind reading crap. “I want to you to take my vein.” Isidora’s statement was given with conviction, which made him curse. “You can’t be serious.” “I’m dead serious.” “Why would you do that?” It was difficult to erase the erotic images from his mind, especially when she was sitting across from him in all her glory—beautiful, caring, young, and oh-so-inviting. “Because I want to feel needed, wanted.” Her voice was low, as if the revelation had sapped all her energy. “What a naïve thing to say. Besides, you’ve been servicing Rohnert. I think you’re already doing a great service to the race doing that alone.” “Are you naturally callous or just plain scared?” Cyrus watched her with defiance oozing from his pores. How could she call him out like that? Did he look scared? He’d never had a reason to be around females who elicited unwanted emotions before, and he wouldn’t start now.

Anica Tomlin, business major, has just learned that the man she’s been planning her future around, her Global Finance professor, already has a beautiful wife and family. Ani cashes in her graduation gift to herself a little early—a trip to Tuscany—but from the moment she boards the wrong train in Pisa, her plans for solitude and self-indulgence begin to unravel around her.

When a bicycle accident thrusts Ani into the skilled hands of the dashing Dr. Cosimo Lazzaro, she reluctantly accepts his invitation to recover in his family’s country villa, perched on a hilltop surrounded by the Lazzaro olive groves. AN INTERVIEW WITH MICHELLE IRWIN

Little Birdy Book Blog: What inspired you to start writing?
Michelle Irwin: I have written for a long time. My earliest memory of creating something was a choose your own adventure book when I was young. I never really saw it as something I could do as a profession though. I never thought I could possibly have enough ideas—enough to say—until I was probably in my 20s. Then I wrote a few things that I was so proud of. Looking back on it now, I’m so glad that KDP didn’t exist back then because those stories were nowhere near publishable. Instead, I joined a crit group and got pretty much smashed in the critiques. Even though it shattered my confidence at first, I have come out the other side with a thicker skin and a better appreciation for what makes a good story and how to twist an expectation or trope around on its head.

LBBB: How long did it take for you to write your first book?
M.I.: This is a hard one to answer, because I have books that will never see the light of day that were my first “books.” Then I have stuff published online (semi-anonymously) which are novel-length stories. And then there is my first published book. On top of that, I tend to jot down the first 2-10,000 words of a story without the intention to finish it just then. Evie was a bit like that, from the time I wrote the very first word to the time I wrote the last in the first proper draft of the original first book was around eighteen months, but that was around 6,000 in a few weeks at the very beginning, and then the rest around sixteen months later.

LBBB: How do you come up with ideas for your stories?
M.I.: So many places, but mostly from “What if?” With Evie’s story, I knew that I wanted to write about a young woman who was a phoenix, and started to explore what that might mean. But I didn’t know who her pair was. Originally I was playing around with the idea of a dragon, based on Chinese legends of the dragon and phoenix as yin and yang. Only, it never quite fit. Then I started to ask what if (and all the subsequent questions): what if she didn’t know what she was? Why would her father keep that from her? What reasons could there be? What if her life was in danger because of what she was? The pieces were forming but not quite all fitting. Then I got hooked on Supernatural and asked, well what if one of the brothers fell for a creature so deeply that he was willing to fight to save her? From there I started to explore the world of my hunters. Why do they do it? What reason do they have to hunt her even if she’s never hurt anyone? What if they were raised to believe that anything other was a threat to humanity? What if falling in love went against not only the young man’s beliefs, but his very heritage. The world of the Rain started to grow from there—partly from the question, What if the forty days of rain in the story of Noah’s ark wasn’t actually water? What if it was the moment when an organization was formed to destroy all the evils in the world?

LBBB: What is your writing routine like? Do you have a set schedule or are you flexible?
M.I.: Because I work full-time in another job and have a family, I have to be somewhat flexible, but I’m trying to get more rigid. I usually try to get two to three hours a night of either writing, editing, or marketing.

LBBB: What inspires you to write?
M.I.: It’s cheaper than therapy? Honestly, I can barely remember the time before I did write. I wonder what I did. How did I spend the hours in the evening because I can’t imagine not having my laptop in front of me and crafting these worlds.

LBBB: Are any of your stories written from personal experience, or any character traits that mirror yours?
M.I.: None of my stories are taken straight from life (although there is a scene in Happily Evan After which is practically a blow-by-blow of a real-life conversation with a friend). Each of my characters do carry a little of myself though—either who I am or who I wish I could be. I’d love to have the confidence of Amity. I believe I have the compassion of Evie. I like to think I have the strength of Alyssa.

LBBB: When in a slump, what do you do? If you read or listen to music, what are your go-to books or music?
M.I.: I love 90s/00s emo bands, and emo songs in general, for getting me inspired to write. Guaranteed if I put on Secondhand Serenade, Dashboard Confessional, Fall Out Boy, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Panic At the Disco, Snow Patrol, 30 Seconds to Mars, Maroon 5, or any of their contemporaries—especially the acoustic/emotional songs, it helps get me in the right mood to write.

LBBB: How do you respond to negative feedback/comments with your work?
M.I.: It depends who it’s coming from and when. From my pre-reader, I love it. I live for it. There’s nothing better than having all the plot holes picked at to improve the piece. From other people, and in reviews, I don’t know. I think I see it and my initial reaction is always disappointment that I let them down. They took a chance on my work, and they didn’t like it. After the initial sting though, I’m a little more able to just move on and ignore it. The biggest books in history have their share of haters. There have been books I’ve disliked that others are rabid fans of. No one story can please every person. It helps immensely to remember that.

LBBB: What is your writing space like? Do you work anywhere or do you have a special place just for your writing? Messy or clean?
M.I.: It’s on the couch with a laptop on my lap. I see authors who have big corkboards with notes stuck to them, or pages and pages of handwritten notebooks, and wonder what’s wrong with me. Most of my notes are in my head. My corkboard of inspiration is links saved onto my favourites bar on Google Chrome. I generally keep timelines, character profiles, etc all locked away in my head—which is probably dangerous at times LOL.

LBBB: Do you have a favorite author? Series?
M.I.: Such an impossible question. My all-time favourite series would probably have to be Lord of the Rings. Sure the description can be a little over the top at times (seriously, do we need to know the exact shade of green of every leaf of every tree in Lothlórien?? – okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but if you’ve read Tolkien you know what I mean). Despite that, the emotions, the fight scenes, the loss, the majesty, it’s all just so . . . epic. It’s probably the set of books I’ve read most. The runner-up to most read is probably Twilight. I know some people will probably say that the two trilogies shouldn’t be mentioned in the same breath, but I like Twilight. Sure it’s a little tropey, sure it has some issues with character development and stalkerness etc, but there are some beautiful passages in there and whenever I pick it up to start reading, I always get sucked into that world. That’s pretty special.

LBBB: Any fur-babies?

M.I.: Two cats: Tom and Sparky. I argued for naming the second one (a new kitten when we got him) Jerry, but was outvoted by an eight-year-old.

BLURB

Clay Jacobs and Evie Meyers are on the run. Together. Being hunted is almost worth it, so long as that remains true. It’s too much to hope that it can last.

Only weeks after their reunion in Salem, his family strikes, and Clay is torn from his lover’s arms once again. Alone, his certainty in their love falters. Everything he thought was true is called into question. Could his family be right? Could he have been caught in Evie’s spell?

Clay’s obsession with finding the truth leads him on a hunt across the globe. The answer will either bring him closer to freedom or destroy the remnants of his shattered heart. His quest may prove more difficult than he imagines when some people will go to any lengths to keep the truth hidden.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Michelle Irwin

Michelle Irwin has been many things in her life: a hobbit taking a precious item to a fiery mountain; a young child stepping through the back of a wardrobe into another land; the last human stranded not-quite-alone in space three million years in the future; a young girl willing to fight for the love of a vampire; and a time-travelling madman in a box. She achieved all of these feats and many more through her voracious reading habit. Eventually, so much reading had to have an effect and the cast of characters inside her mind took over and spilled out onto the page.

Michelle lives in sunny Queensland in the land down under with her surprisingly patient husband and ever-intriguing daughter, carving out precious moments of writing and reading time around her accounts-based day job. A lover of love and overcoming the odds, she primarily writes paranormal and fantasy romance.
