About the Author
Michelle Irwin
Michelle Irwin has been many things in her life: a hobbit taking a precious item to a fiery mountain; a young child stepping through the back of a wardrobe into another land; the last human stranded not-quite-alone in space three million years in the future; a young girl willing to fight for the love of a vampire; and a time-travelling madman in a box. She achieved all of these feats and many more through her voracious reading habit. Eventually, so much reading had to have an effect and the cast of characters inside her mind took over and spilled out onto the page.
Michelle lives in sunny Queensland in the land down under with her surprisingly patient husband and ever-intriguing daughter, carving out precious moments of writing and reading time around her accounts-based day job. A lover of love and overcoming the odds, she primarily writes paranormal and fantasy romance.

Little Birdy Book Blog: What inspired you to start writing? Rocky Rochford: My dog, when I was young, for English class, we'd be given written assignments of things we got up to over the weekend, well come the weekends, my German shepard and I got up to a handful of things and when I began chronicling our little adventures, my journing into the written world began. LBBB: How long did it take for you to write your first book? R.R.: I spent 8 months writing my first book at 13, but then when I was 16 I re-wrote it and then did the same at 18 and again at 20 before finally releasing it when I was 21, so 8 months, or 8 years, I'll let you decide. LBBB: How do you come up with ideas for your stories? R.R.: Honestly, anything can give me inspiration, a work I have coming out this year, London Calling, it's a two part novel, but it only came about after I went "I'd love to write a scene that involves an assignation in the Alps." Then I thought of the protagonist who would be best to do it, and then more ideas began to follow until eventually I have one book written and the second calling me to my computer. LBBB: What is your writing routine like? Do you have a set schedule or are you flexible? R.R.: I write when I have the opportunity, when my fingers are still capable after a week of grouting a pool, or when I actually have the time. I have so many things on the go that sadly I can go weeks at a time without writing, so instead I try to do most of my writing at night, just like I used to when I had insomnia and would write every night during the hours of 12pm and 6am. LBBB: What inspires you to write? R.R.: The roll of the tide, the bellows of the wind. Anything and everything beckons and inspires me to write, even the whispers of darkness. LBBB: Are any of your stories written from personal experience, or any character traits that mirror yours? R.R.: A lot of my characters reflect a side of me, how people have seen me, said I was like and how I know I am, how I was. Matthew Radley is one of the closest characters to myself that I have ever written. LBBB: When in a slump, what do you do? If you read or listen to music, what are your go-to books or music? R.R.: Well you can't read and run, but you can read and listen to Music, and depending on the mood or slump, a different artist and song are called for, but no matter what, it is always rock, or metal. LBBB: How do you respond to negative feedback/comments with your work? R.R.: I welcome it, hate mail is a sign that your career is on the right track. You're never going to please anyone and when that person is slagging you off, other people hear them and think I'll check him out myself and see what they are on about. LBBB: What is your writing space like? Do you work anywhere or do you have a special place just for your writing? Messy or clean? R.R.: I try to keep my space clean, but my dogs keep climbing all over it, seriously. I do most of my writing now in my bed. LBBB: Do you have a favorite author? Series? R.R.: I love the Dirk Pitt Novels by Clive Cussler, I have read every book twice and if I'm honest, will probably have read them all twice again within the next ten years, lol. LBBB: Any fur-babies? R.R.: Do my dogs count? LBBB: They sure do! Thanks for joining us this week, Rocky! Author Bio:My name is Rocky Rochford and I am a Scuba Diving, Photo taking, Adventure Seeking, Sword Collecting, Writer & Marine Conservationist. From Day 1 I have been a Writer and a Writer I shall forever remain.
I like to consider myself to be a Student of Everything, and yet a Master of Nothing, who does not choose what he writes, but writes what chooses him, be it fantasy, crime, poetry, philosophy or even adventure. Little Birdy Book Blog: What inspired you to start writing? Lynne Murray: I've always loved stories, even tried to write a "Little Golden Book" style story before I could read. During a difficult time in my 20s, I was walking around talking to the walls about my sufferings when my friend said, "You always say you want to write, why don't you write down what you say when you talk to the walls." I did, and I have ever since. LBBB: How long did it take for you to write your first book? L.M.: My first novel, a sensitive story of disillusioned youth, took about three years to write. It was totally unreadable--I tried later and even I couldn't get through it. But I learned that I love putting jigsaw pieces together into a novel. My second book, a mystery, took four years to write and was published in 1988. LBBB: How do you come up with ideas for your stories? L.M.: I like to turn situations upside down when I write. For example, Gravitas: Valkyrie in the Forbidden Zone stemmed partly from a Carl Jung book called Flying Saucers, where he suggests that the UFO craze is an example of a religion being formed in front of our eyes. That led me to think, "What if the people of Earth have been doing this for thousands of years, creating a new religion every time they run into alien tourists?" I also liked the idea of a heroine who comes from a planet where women are expected, indeed required, to have several husbands. LBBB: What is your writing routine like? Do you have a set schedule or are you flexible? L.M.: Over the years, I've tried many tactics and the one thing that has worked most reliably is writing the minute I get out of bed in the morning. One problem with that method is that when it works best, my "writing brain" gets started before I really want to get up and I end up losing sleep to write--not complaining, I like that even when it's annoying. LBBB: What inspires you to write? L.M.: I think of things that make me laugh, make me want to change injustices or sometimes even scare me. I feel driven to weave these things into stories to share with others. LBBB: Are any of your stories written from personal experience, or any character traits that mirror yours? L.M.: Many things from my own life make it into the stories, but always transmuted into the characters' experience. For example, it might take years to think of the perfect revenge to a wrong or response to a remark or action that bothered me. The heroine of my story comes up with the perfect response right there on the spot and acts on it immediately. LBBB: When in a slump, what do you do? If you read or listen to music, what are your go-to books or music? L.M.: I generally am reading fiction, but sometimes when I'm stuck I read books on writing, until I can't stand it anymore and have to go back to writing. Most recently Sean Platt, Johnny B. Truant, Joanna Penn & David Gaughran's Indie Author Power Pack energized me. LBBB: How do you respond to negative feedback/comments with your work? L.M.: Sometimes those can provide helpful ideas to improve future books, but often they reveal more about the commentator's views and prejudices than my work. LBBB: What is your writing space like? Do you work anywhere or do you have a special place just for your writing? Messy or clean? L.M.: I write on bits of paper, envelopes, etc., put in my pocket and transcribe to the computer. Obviously the bits of paper pile up. LBBB: Do you have a favorite author? Series? L.M.: Um, sorry, I've got to join the millions who love Jane Austen. Also I've read every Terry Pratchett. LBBB: Any fur-babies? L.M.: Kitties rule! I live with a small group of rescued felines, who daily return the favor. LBBB: Thanks for stopping by Lynne and letting us pick your brain a bit! Author Bio:Lynne Murray lives in San Francisco. When not writing, she spends a lot of time staring at the ocean and happily indulging a small group of formerly feral cats. Her published books include: Gravitas: Valkyrie in the Forbidden Zone, The Falstaff Vampire Files, The Bride of the Living Dead (a romantic comedy for women who love monster movies too much) and four books in the Josephine Fuller, sleuth of size mystery series.

James Quinn: I've always wanted to write from when I won a book token in a primary school writing competition. Unfortunately real life got in the way until I hit 40! Then I realised that I wanted to live the dream. LBBB: How long did it take for you to write your first book? J.Q.: A Game For Assassins has been in my head for about five years. The actual writing took roughly about two of those years. It was good to finally get it all down on paper after having it stored up inside me for so long. LBBB: How do you come up with ideas for your stories? J.Q.: The scenario always starts it off. The "What if" question. What if killers target a network of spies. What if the intelligence services discover the plot? What would happen? After that I put the main characters in that scenario and see where they lead me. LBBB: What is your writing routine like? Do you have a set schedule or are you flexible? J.Q.: On this book it was scattergun-like. Writing bit here and there, juggling work and day to day life certainly gave the story flavour and added some interesting ideas. Hopefully in the future my writing time will be more structured - hopefully! LBBB: What inspires you to write? J.Q.: If I'm honest - and I know I'm probably meant to come up with a deeply philosophical answer - it's because I want to see where my characters are going. I mean even I don't know, so it's nice to share their adventures with an audience. LBBB: Are any of your stories written from personal experience, or any character traits that mirror yours? J.Q.: A lot of the situations and experiences that are in A Game For Assassins come from my own personal experiences. I spent 15 years working on various types of intelligence/information gathering and security operations, so the day to day "meat and potatoes" of how things work comes from that. Character traits - well I'm certainly grumpy at times like my main character "Gorilla." LBBB: When in a slump, what do you do? If you read or listen to music, what are your go-to books or music? J.Q.: I walk and walk and walk, I run, I shoot, I train in various unarmed combat systems, so it bleeds it out of me and works off the frustration and aggression. I also have a stable of old books that inspire me to "get back out there" and start writing again. LBBB: How do you respond to negative feedback/comments with your work? J.Q.: Its part of the gig for any creative person. There will always be people that love what you do and those that don't. It's a big, big world and everyone has their own specifics. Like a boxer you just have to roll with the punches and get back up to do better when you get knocked down. LBBB: What is your writing space like? Do you work anywhere or do you have a special place just for your writing? Messy or clean? J.Q.: My office desk is "relatively" tidy and I try to keep it that way. I'm probably borderline OCD! LBBB: Do you have a favorite author? Series? J.Q.: So many......Stephen King has been with me since boyhood, John Le Carre most definitely and Elmore Leonard. If I can write dialogue half as good as him by the end of my career I'll be a very happy man. LBBB: Any fur-babies? J.Q.: I got a fish that keeps attacking his underwater castle - I call him Nemo. Does that count? LBBB: Haha that sure does! Thanks for joining us this week, James! Author Bio:James Quinn spent 15 years in the secret world of covert operations, undercover investigations and international security before turning his hand to writing.
He is trained in hand to hand combat and in the use of a variety of weaponry including small edged weapons, Japanese Swords and Hunting Bows. He is also a crack pistol shot for CQB (Close Quarter Battle) and many of his experiences he has incorporated into his works of fiction. He lives in the United Kingdom and travels extensively around the globe. Little Birdy Book Blog: What inspired you to start writing? Markie Madden: I've been writing as long as I can remember. In 4th grade I had a teacher who would make a squiggle on our papers. Then, the assignment was to finish the squiggle into a drawing and write a story about it. LBBB: How long did it take for you to write your first book? M.M.: Several years! Though, to be fair, I started it while still in high school. LBBB: How do you come up with ideas for your stories? M.M.: My most recent books have all come to new as I'm just about to drift off to sleep (thank you, Post-It notes! ), though my first book was inspired by a game my best friend and I played in high school, and my second book was inspired by my horse. LBBB: What is your writing routine like? Do you have a set schedule or are you flexible? M.M.: I usually spend my mornings and afternoons doing marketing things, social media, or working on my website. I reserve the evening and night for writing, which is when I've found to be at my most creative. LBBB: What inspires you to write? M.M.: Anything and everything can inspire me to write, but mostly I do it because I have a story to share and want to spread it around. LBBB: Are any of your stories written from personal experience, or any character traits that mirror yours? M.M.: My first book's main character was modeled after me, or who I wished (at the time) I could be. LBBB: When in a slump, what do you do? If you read or listen to music, what are your go-to books or music? M.M.: I've found that having more than one project going helps me a lot. If I get hung up on one, I can go to the other for a while. But I've always found writing the end was hard, because I didn't want the story to come to an end. Now that I'm working on a series, maybe I won't have so much trouble. LBBB: How do you respond to negative feedback/comments with your work? M.M.: You can’t please everyone, and if you’re in the business, you’re going to get negative remarks or reviews. If someone just doesn’t like your work, well, there will be someone else that does. If you get a comment that, oh, there are spelling errors in the work, then you can go fix that. What upsets me the most are reviews or comments that seem pointless and in no way constructive for the author. LBBB: What is your writing space like? Do you work anywhere or do you have a special place just for your writing? Messy or clean? M.M.: My writing space is either in my bed after my husband has gone to sleep (I'm a night owl), or a corner of the dining room table. It rarely gets used so I just sort of took it over. I try to keep things neat because if I don't, I can't remember where I put anything! LBBB: Do you have a favorite author? Series? M.M.: Kay Hooper and the Special Crimes Unit series, Nora Roberts, J.D. Robb and the In Death series, Jean M. Auel and the Earth's Children series. LBBB: Any fur-babies? M.M.: I have 3 dogs and a horse! Of course, the dogs think they're human and the horse thinks she's a dog, so that works for me! Author Bio:Markie Madden was born in Midland, Texas, August 19, 1975. She grew up in the small town of Flushing, MI, where she graduated from high school, met her husband, and had her children. She's written stories all her life, and tried many times to publish, with no success. She finally published her first book, Once Upon a Western Way, digitally in 2012. In early 2013, she was diagnosed with leukemia and spent the next year battling this blood cancer. After she was unable to return to the traditional workforce, she turned back to her love of writing and founded Metamorph Publishing.
